Lexus driver robs bank

August 17, 2001

— A man who drove a Lexus from Kansas to Arkansas was arrested Thursday after he motored the car to a bank and used a BB gun to rob a teller.

Richard Banister, 46, of Wichita, was arrested by an off-duty Arkansas highway police officer, who wrestled Banister to the floor at the Firstar bank branch, said Van Buren police Lt. Brent Grill.

Police recovered the BB gun and a bag containing cash at the bank and also picked up evidence from the late-model luxury vehicle that was parked outside an insurance office next door to the bank, Grill said.

Grill would not say what evidence was found or how much money was recovered. He did say Banister drove to Arkansas from somewhere in Kansas.

"It's kind of an interesting story," Grill said, but would not elaborate.

The robbery occurred about 3:30 p.m.
