KU deans share varied backgrounds, teaching experiences

School of Allied Health

School of Nursing

Name: Karen Miller

Start date: Nursing, 1996; Allied Health, 1998

Career: Miller was vice president of nursing and clinical services at The Children's Hospital in Denver prior to her appointment as dean of KU's School of Nursing. She has 20 years of experience in hospital administration.

She has served on the National Advisory Council of the Institute of Nursing Research of the National Institutes of Health.

She serves on several editorial boards and corporate boards of directors.

School of Architecture and Urban Design

Name: John Gaunt

Start date: 1994

Career: Gaunt was a practicing architect for 32 years before coming to KU as dean of the School of Architecture. His last job was as chairman and CEO of Ellerbe Becket Inc. of Minneapolis, Minn.

In 1993 it was ranked as the largest architecture firm in the United States by Building Design and Construction Journal.

School of Business

Name: William Fuerst

Start date: July 2000

Career: A former professor and administrator at Texas A&M; University, Fuerst is considered a leader in the use of information technology in business. He was the founding director of Texas A&M;'s Center for the Management of Information Systems, which contributed $400,000 in revenue to the school.

Continuing Education

Name: JoAnn Smith

Start date: July 1, 2001

Career: Since 1999, Smith has served as the dean of the School of Continuing Education at Marywood University in Pennsylvania.

Prior to that she was at the University of Kentucky for 17 years, rising from director of business and industry training to associate dean for university extension.

School of Education

Name: Angela Lumpkin

Start date: June 4, 2001

Career: Lumpkin was dean of education at the State University of West Georgia for four years, and previously served as a professor of physical education and women's basketball coach at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from 1974 to 1977.

Edwards Campus

Name: Robert Clark

Start date: 1997

Career: Clark was dean of the School of Management at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Mo., prior to his appointment as dean of KU's Overland Park campus.

Clark oversaw an $8 million fund-raising campaign for the Rockhurst management school.

School of Engineering

Name: Carl Locke

Start date: 1986

Career: A researcher in the corrosion of steel in concrete, Locke has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the Federal Highway Administration. He was at the University of Oklahoma before coming to KU, and directed OU's School of Chemical Engineering and Material Science for six years.

School of Fine Arts

Name: Toni-Marie Montgomery

Start date: April 2000

Career: Montgomery was director of Arizona State University's School of Music for four years before coming to KU. A renowned pianist, she is a founding member of the Black Music Repertory Ensemble of Columbia College in Chicago.

School of Journalism and Mass Comm-unications

Name: James Gentry

Start date: 1997

Career: Gentry was dean of the School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, for five years prior to coming to KU. He also served on the faculty of the University of Missouri at Columbia School of Journalism for 16 years.

Graduate School and International Programs

Name: Diana Carlin

Start date: July 2000

Career: Carlin, who joined the KU faculty in 1987, has specialized in the study of political communications during her academic career at KU.

She has served on an advisory board to the commission that sets up the presidential debates every four years.

School of Law

Name: Stephen McAllister

Start date: July 2000

Career: McAllister, a KU alumnus, served as a clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justices Byron White and Clarence Thomas. He also has served as the state's chief lawyer before the U.S. Supreme Court.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Name: Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett

Start date: Interim dean

Career: A psychologist, McCluskey-Fawcett holds degrees in child development and psychology.

She came to KU in 1985 and has served as a department chair, associate dean, associate vice chancellor and associate provost. In 1998, she received the Outstanding Educator Award from Mortar Board and the college's J. Michael Young Academic Advisor Award.

School of Medicine

Name: Deborah Powell

Start date: 1997

Career: Powell was chair of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Kentucky before coming to KU. As dean, she supervises 23 departments at the KU School of Medicine.

She is the author of a number of publications and abstracts primarily in gynecologic and breast pathology, and is the co-author of two books.

School of Pharmacy

Name: Jack Fincham

Start date: 1994

Career: Prior to entering graduate school, Fincham was a pharmacy owner and long-term care consultant pharmacist. His research interests include pharmacoeconomics, pharmaocoepidemiology, patient compliance, adverse drug effects, drug use and misuse among the elderly, and smoking cessation therapies.

School of Social Welfare

Name: Ann Weick

Start date: 1988

Career: Weick joined KU's social work faculty in 1976 and has spent almost her entire academic career at KU. Her areas of interest include social policy, social work theory and women's issues. From 1981 to 1988, she served as chair of the doctoral programs.
