Lawrence city commissioners made an exception Tuesday to newly adopted moratoria on annexations of land in North Lawrence and floodplains.
They agreed to annex 0.46 acres of land owned by Larry and Judy Schomer that is part of a parcel that includes their Hardister Painting & Decorating Service, 912 N. Third St., that has long been inside city limits.
The Schomers' attorney, Price Banks, said the land is already used for the business.
That drew the attention of county officials, who warned the Schomers about using the land outside of its agricultural zoning.
Bringing the land into the city and rezoning it accordingly would solve that problem, Banks said. Commissioners seemed reluctant to set a precedent by overlooking the just-adopted moratoria, but gave unanimous approval to the request.
