Kansas City goalie Tony Meola made a sprawling one-handed save to thwart San Jose's best scoring chance and the Wizards tied the Earthquakes, 0-0, Saturday night.
Meola's 16 shutouts last season set an MLS record and earned him the league's MVP award.
San Jose's Joe Cannon, meanwhile, became the first goalie this year to blank defending champion Kansas City (3-1-1), which entered the game with a league-leading nine goals.
Meola made his sparkling save six minutes before halftime, blocking Earthquakes midfielder Manuel Lagos' shot.
San Jose's Dwayne DeRosario, soaring over KC's Nick Garcia in photo above, sent a shot wide of the right post during a counterattack in overtime.
