MS Walk

April 29, 2001

The 6-mile trek -- which began and ended in Burcham Park -- attracted more than 200 participants, who were asked prior to the event to obtain sponsors for each mile they would walk.

Thirty percent of the money raised will stay in the area and benefit people living with multiple sclerosis. The rest will go toward research of the disease.

Emily and William Zung, Lawrence, coordinated the event.

Emily Zung said she was pleased with the turnout this year and was looking forward to finding out how much was raised. The figures were not available Saturday night.

She said she was thankful for all the volunteers and contributors.

An unexpected contributor for the walk was Criticare Home Health Services Inc. of Lawrence. Three blocks into the walk, a Lawrence participant who was using a wheelchair couldn't go any farther when one of the wheels on his chair fell off. Criticare office manager Sheila Showalter donated a wheelchair so the participant could finish the fund-raiser. Criticare employees also fixed his wheelchair.

"We were happy to help him and the effort," Showalter said.
