A Lawrence man was arrested in connection with attempting to sell crack cocaine, but authorities learned that the suspect was carrying only small chunks of soap.
The 24-year-old transient was found Monday evening near Highpointe Apartments, at Sixth and Iowa streets, when officers spotted him after being called to the College Motel, 1703 W. Sixth St. Police were called by a man who said the suspect had entered his vehicle.
The vehicle's owner chased the suspect, and police caught him near the apartment complex. When he was apprehended, officers searched the man and found a baggie containing what police thought was crack cocaine, but the man told officers that it was only pieces of bar soap.
A manager at the motel also told officers that the suspect had attempted to rent a room in exchange for "crack," police said.
The man was arrested in connection with possession with intent to sell crack cocaine, vehicle burglary, theft, obstruction, a probation violation and a municipal court warrant. He remained in the Douglas County Jail on $5,750 bond, though no charges had been filed Wednesday.
