Township request to drop road maintenance OK'd

Marion Township is one step closer to having fewer miles of roads to maintain.

Douglas County commissioners Wednesday approved the township's recommendation to declare portions of East 700 Road, North 713 Road, North 720 Road and East 750 Road as minimum maintenance. The roads are located near Lone Star Lake southwest of Lawrence.

The request will be forwarded to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission, which must hold a public hearing on the issue. If approved, the county commissioners will give the final approval and hold their own public hearing.

Last year, the commissioners refused to vacate some of the same Marion Township roads because the move would have landlocked a property owner in the area.

Speed limit lowered near Midland Junction

Because of safety concerns, county commissioners agreed to lower the speed limit near Midland Junction.

The speed limit on County Road 1045 north of Lawrence, commonly called Wellman Road, now will be posted 45 mph from U.S. Highways 24/59 to the Jefferson County line.

Although studies have shown that most people drive between 58 and 62 mph on the one-mile stretch of road, Keith Browning, the county's director of Public Works, said he hoped that people may drive a little slower. He said he also will talk with the Douglas County Sheriff's department about increasing patrol cars in the area.
