Ljworld.com honored as best Kansas newspaper Web site

The Kansas Press Association has awarded www.ljworld.com as the best newspaper Web site in Kansas for the second year in a row.

The site, which is the online news source for Lawrence, Kan., consists of interactive features, exclusive online content, breaking news and extensive print content from the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper and video from Sunflower Cablevision's 6News.

Ljworld.com was presented the honor Saturday, April 22, at the 109th annual KPA Convention and Trade Show at the Lawrence Holidome.

The online award was one of 31 received by the Journal-World, including the overall sweepstakes award, in the Kansas Press Association's Awards of Excellence contest.

The online awards for Best Newspaper Web Site, Daily Division, were as follows: first, Lawrence Journal-World; second, Topeka Capital-Journal; third, Manhattan Mercury; honorable mention Arkansas City Traveler; honorable mention, Emporia Gazette.

Ljworld.com is the major daily news site operated by World Online, the online division of the World Company, which also owns the Journal-World and Sunflower Cablevision in Lawrence.

Bernie Re, online general manager, said the award was a recognition for the online group's efforts to build super-local news Web sites that serve the diverse needs of the Lawrence community.

"Our mission is to build an online resource that lives up to our slogan, 'Where people go for news, sports, the arts and community,' with the news being ljworld.com, sports being kusports.com, the arts being themagonline.com and community represented in lawrence.com," Re said.

Several of the World Co.'s weekly newspaper Web sites, designed by World Online, also won awards in the KPA's contest for weekly papers: DeSoto Explorer (www.desotoexplorer.com), second place; Eudora News (www.eudoranews.com), honorable mention, and The Mirror (www.tonganoxiemirror.com), honorable mention.

The World Online content group consists of Dave Toplikar, online editor; Ryan Ritter, online sports manager; Michael Newman, online entertainment manager; Isaac Bell, senior web producer; Carrie Lyn Brammer, web producer, and Helen Brennan, web producer.

World Online's creative group consists of Kevin Dixon, online production manager; David Ryan, web developer/manager for Kansas weeklies; John Van Sickel, web designer, Sam Huss, web designer, and Dave Mead, online marketing representative.
