Nonbudget issues also on legislative agenda

April 23, 2001

— Key issues awaiting attention when the Legislature reconvenes:

School finance

House and Senate budget committees have agreed to increase spending $67 million for elementary and secondary education, as Gov. Bill Graves proposed. The Senate Education Committee has proposed an additional $27.7 million.

Mill levy

The statewide property tax levy for public schools expires July 1. Senators want to renew it at its current 20 mills; the House, at 18 mills.

Mental health

The House and Senate disagree on how far to go in requiring insurance companies to cover treatment for mental illnesses.

Child support

Negotiators will reconcile House and Senate bills to promote efficient operation of the state's child support processing center.
