Leavenworth Free State High's No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles tennis players boosted the Firebirds to a third-place finish Tuesday in the 23rd annual Leavenworth Invitational.
FSHS junior Rishi Surana defeated Topeka High's Howard Johns in the third-place match, and the Firebirds' duo of junior Drew Smith and sophomore Eyad Safadi was clipped by the Trojans' team in the championship.
St. Joseph (Mo.) Central won the eight-team tournament with 49 points, followed by Topeka (40) and Free State (36).
"This was a tremendous team effort," FSHS coach Jon Renberger said. "We took third in this tournament last year as well, but with a much more experienced team. There is much room for improvement, but we're heading in the right direction."
FSHS sophomore Alan Martinez went 2-1 to finish fifth at No. 1 singles, and sophomore Matt Schwabauer also was 2-1 to place third at No. 3 singles.
The Firebirds' top doubles duo of senior Spencer Hilt and sophomore Ben Cropp was 1-2 and finished fourth.
