— Paul Westphal, who was fired as coach of the Seattle SuperSonics amid player discord just 15 games into the season last fall, has been hired as coach at Pepperdine.

Westphal, 50, will take over the program from Jan van Breda Kolff, who last week became coach at St. Bonaventure. Westphal's son, Mike, is a walk-on player for the Waves.

Westphal signed a five-year contract, but financial terms weren't disclosed.

This is Westphal's first Division I coaching job. He led the SuperSonics for two-plus seasons before being fired last fall days after an on-court shouting match with guard Gary Payton during a game in Dallas.
