Eight from KU named foundation fellows
Eight Kansas University graduates and graduate students are among 903 students nationwide to be named National Science Foundation fellows.
The NSF fellowships will provide each student with a stipend of $18,000 for three academic years of graduate study.
KU senior Stuartt Corder and May 2000 graduate Matt Haug, who still takes KU classes, are among the fellows.
Three May 1999 graduates doing graduate work elsewhere were also named fellows: Tom Buller, Dan Pugh and Justin Bradford.
In addition, three KU graduate students Andrew Campbell, Molly Rightmyer and Heather York are 2001 NSF fellows.
The NSF Graduate Fellowships offer recognition and three years of support for advanced study to outstanding graduate students in mathematical, physical, biological, engineering and other sciences.
Student ticketed in anti-gay graffiti case
Kansas University police issued a ticket to a KU student for writing anti-gay remarks on a residence hall door.
Craig D. Avery, 19, was issued a notice to appear on a misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property. The citation was issued Wednesday afternoon after investigators identified Avery through interviews with two people who saw him write the offending words on the door of two other residents, one homosexual and one bisexual, KU Police Sgt. Troy Mailen said.
Avery also is a KU student and is a resident on the same floor of Lewis Hall where the victims live, Mailen said.
Diversion approved in KU sexual battery case
A Kansas University student charged with sexual battery entered into diversion proceedings with Douglas County prosecutors, which means that his case will be dismissed if he completes certain requirements.
The 23-year-old will be required to complete 20 hours of community service and enroll in counseling classes, along with completing standard requirements such as obeying the law and paying court costs and the diversion fee, Douglas County Dist. Atty. Christine Tonkovich said.
The suspect was charged with one count of sexual battery for molesting a female KU student a year ago at Hashinger Hall. If the suspect successfully completes the requirements, Tonkovich said, his case will be dismissed and it could be expunged from his record after three years.
KU to sponsor girls' engineering camp
Girls have until April 30 to sign up for a hands-on engineering camp meant to inspire females to explore career options in the field.
The camp, which runs from June 10 to 16 at Kansas University, is for young women entering grades 9 through 12. Registration is limited to 30 students and the cost is $200.
Called Project Discovery, the camp will encourage girls to exchange ideas, develop create thinking and problem-solving skills, and learn about the engineering profession. KU School of Engineering faculty and professionals in the field will instruct the girls.
For more information or registration, contact Jenelle Marsh at jmarsh@ukans.edu or call 864-2936.
KU student wins foundation grant
Marilla Hazlett, a Kansas University doctoral student, has been awarded a $2,000 grant to help her study public reaction to the use of pesticides.
Hazlett was one of 31 graduate students nationwide to receive the 2001 Woodrow Wilson Foundation dissertation grant in the area of women's studies, women's health and children's health. She plans to use the money to help her research this summer at the Dorothy Freeman/Rachel Carson Collection at Bates College in Maine.
Hazlett is a Lawrence native who graduated from Amherst College in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in studio art and cultural anthropology. At KU, she has been a graduate teaching assistant in history, women's studies and environmental studies while seeking her doctorate in environmental history.
