Buffalo, N.Y. Remembering his former high school for helping shape him as a person, NBA center Christian Laettner rewarded his alma mater with a $1 million donation on Thursday.
"Some of the finest memories I had in my whole life are from my high school days," Laettner said, speaking of Buffalo's Nichols high school.
"More than anything, I think Nichols prepared me for life. It's tough to explain the little ways that it helps you, but the high school has a family atmosphere.
Laettner is a 9-year NBA veteran currently playing for the Washington Wizards. The donation will go toward the construction of a new gymnasium, which will now bear Laettner's name, as well as establishing a scholarship for students.
