Area students to compete at state geography bee

April 5, 2001

Several Lawrence students will compete this week for a chance to advance to the National Geographic Bee.

One winner from Friday's competition at Fort Hays State University in Hays will advance to the national finals May 22-23 in Washington, D.C.

Lawrence students who qualified for the state competition are Tamara Hilmes, Southwest Junior High School; Kyle Chauvin, West Junior High School; Matthias Heilke, Schwegler School; James Jeans, South Junior High School; and Aaron Trent, Central Junior High School. Kasey Moomau of Oskaloosa Middle School will also compete.

Students qualified by winning their school bee and earning a top score on a written exam.

The National Geographic Society developed the geography bee in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States.
