Lawrence city commissioners directed traffic planners Tuesday to conduct public meetings for a proposed roundabout at 24th Place and Inverness Drive.
Area residents attended Tuesday's commission meeting to protest the proposal, scheduled for construction this summer. Residents said that the area hasn't encountered traffic problems, that a roundabout would inhibit emergency vehicles and that it would hurt property values.
City Engineer Terese Gorman said a roundabout would ease future traffic problems to come with development in the area and that emergency vehicles shouldn't be significantly hindered.
ordinance vote delayed
Final approval for an ordinance requiring registration of rental properties in single-family neighborhoods was not on Tuesday's city commission agenda.
Commissioners gave preliminary approval at their previous meeting. Typically, final approval follows at the next meeting.
City Manager Mike Wildgen said the matter was inadvertently left off the agenda. He said approval would be the final act of the commission that concludes its term at next week's meeting.
