Prairie Village -- Senior golfer Brett Buxton carded a 78 to place eighth overall and lead Lawrence High to a second-place finish Monday at the season-opening Shawnee Mission South Invitational at Meadowbrook CC.
The Lions compiled 323 strokes, one ahead of host SM South's 324. Shawnee Mission East won with 306 shots.
"It was a good place to start," LHS coach Ron Commons said. "For Shawnee Mission East, it's pretty much their home course."
Spencer Wilson (80), Camron Flanders (82) and Zach Blevins (83) also contributed to Lawrence's team total.
"It could be tight like that all year," Commons said of his golfers' scores.
LHS will split its squad for two events next Monday. The Lions are scheduled to play at the Shawnee Mission Northwest Invitational and Manhattan Invitational.
