The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission gave its unanimous endorsement Wednesday night to plans for a new motel in south Lawrence.
The commission approved a preliminary development plan that, with Lawrence City Commission approval, will give developers the go-ahead to build an Express Motel and Suites on South Iowa Street.
The three-story, 78-room proposed motel would be on the west side of Iowa Street, between 33rd and 35th streets, in front of Hollywood Theaters.
The new motel will leave only one undeveloped lot left north of the Pizzeria Uno restaurant in the planned commercial development.
The motel, which will offer mid- to upper-range priced rooms, will face Hollywood Theaters, with its rear to Iowa Street.
Despite the unanimous approval, commissioners voiced concerns that developers hadn't allotted enough full-sized parking spaces and that the three-story building would cover up nearby businesses.
In other business, planning commissioners approved a revised preliminary development plan for the Target planned commercial development that will include a new Sonic Drive-In south of 31st Street.
Tuesday night, the city commission approved rezoning 29 acres west of Steak 'N Shake for the Sonic.
At the city commission's behest, planning commissioner agreed there should be two access roads to Sonic to reduce traffic on 31st Street.
Planning commissioners also agreed that other businesses in the development, such as Target, Pier 1 and others, should share costs of a 31st Street turning lane into the development.
