Editor named for The Mag

Jon Niccum, a longtime music and film writer in the Lawrence and Kansas City area, is the new editor of The Mag, the Journal-World's entertainment magazine.

Niccum's hiring is part of a continuing effort by the Journal-World to expand its arts and entertainment coverage in the Lawrence-Topeka-Kansas City area.

Niccum spent seven years as music-film editor at PitchWeekly, and founded and produced the Kansas City/ Lawrence Area Music Awards (KLAMMIES). He has received two Kansas City Press Club Awards for his film writing, a Kansas City Society of Black Journalists Media Award and a National Music Journalism Award.

Niccum graduated from Kansas University in 1989 with a film degree.

Jan Biles, who has served as The Mag's editor since its inception five years ago, will continue her duties as features-arts editor.

She will supervise the Journal-World's features and arts staff, write stories and reviews and coordinate long-range planning.
