— Baker University coughed the ball up on Graceland's one-yard line with six seconds remaining and the Yellowjackets escaped with a 24-21 football win on Saturday.

With about three minutes remaining, Baker's Brant Brittingham was wide right on a 37-yard field goal attempt that would have forged a tie.

Baker regained possession and mounted a drive. With :06 showing and Baker on the 'Jackets one, BU coach John Frangoulis opted to go for the win instead of the tie. But quarterback Levi Schuck and tailback Kevin King mishandled the exchange and Graceland recovered the fumble.

King was playing because Howard Verdell, subbing for injured starter Terence Spencer, had suffered a season-ending leg injury.

Baker soared to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard Verdell run and a 53-yard pass from Schuck to Mackie Valentin. But Graceland scored 24 unanswered points, thanks mainly to turnovers BU had seven overall and hung on.

Baker is 2-1 and 1-1 in the Heart of America Conference.
