Recreation calendar

Lawrence Bicycle Club

Today The Muffin Ride departs at 8 a.m. from the Perkins/Cycle Works parking lot.

Sunday The Show-n-Go ride, a longer tour with maps, will begin at 8:30 a.m. in South Park.

Tuesday The leisure rides depart at 6 p.m. from Constant Park.

Thursday The Vomit Comet (fast ride to focus on speed) and Stop and Smell the Vomit (a social ride) depart at 6 p.m. from Broken Arrow Park.

Octoginta volunteer meetings are under way. Contact Jim Turner, 842-5174, to help.

Lawrence Parks and Recreation

The fall leisure activities brochures for Lawrence Parks and Recreation are available at all city recreation centers, the Lawrence Public Library and city hall. Walk-in enrollment is under way at all city recreation centers and continues through the first day of classes.

Here is a list of significant dates and activities:

Today Saturday Morning Free Program, 10 a.m. Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper.

Kids Fishing Derby, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Mary's Lake, 31st and Haskell streets, for anglers 13 and younger. Preregistration is required.

Magnificent Monarch nature class and tagging project. Sessions begin at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. at nature center.

Tuesday Wild Adventures for Preschoolers and Parents, 10 a.m., nature center. Also on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Topic: "Incredible Insects."

Wednesday Young Naturalist classes, for ages 5 to 7, 4 p.m., nature center. Topic: "Incredible Insects."

Registration deadline for youth basketball league. Season runs Nov. 6 to Dec. 18. Games are on Saturdays.

Thursday Young Naturalist classes, for ages 8 to 13, 4 p.m., nature center. Topic: "Incredible Insects."

Oct. 3 Second session of learn-to-swim classes begins.

Oct. 11 Deadline for submissions for the 29th annual Halloween Paint-in Contest for students in third grade through high school.

Eagle Bend tee times start at 7 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and at 7:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. Twilight fees are in effect until Daylight Saving Time. After 6:30 p.m. nine holes cost $7. Carts are extra. Call 748-0600 for reservations, which may be arranged a week in advance. League play is under way; call for information.

Douglas County Senior Services

Douglas County Senior Services, 745 Vt., has several classes taking place. All Douglas County residents age 55 and older are invited to participate. Future seniors also are welcome if space allows. Call Senior Services, 842-0543, for information or to register.

Bhaktivana yoga

Monday Beginners and continuing students of Bhaktivana yoga meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Bhaktivana Yoga Center, 1204 N. 200 Road, Baldwin. Classes also meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m. Saturdays.

Wednesday Beginners and continuing students, 6:30 p.m., Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread.

Lawrence Aquahawks Swim Team

Monday through Saturday Lawrence Aquahawks, a year-round competitive swim team for Lawrence area youths, meets for practice at the Haskell Indian Nations University pool. Practice times vary according to ability and age. Contact head coach Brian Barnes at 841-8891 for more information.

Lawrence Masters Swimming Club

Monday through Saturday All levels of ability and interest from ages 18 and up are welcome to join Lawrence Masters Swimming Club. Morning practices are at the Lawrence Aquatic Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Fridays, the club practices at Carl Knox Natatorium. Contact Daniel Fisher, 841-5167, for information.

Chess club

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Yoga classes taught by Margaret Carr in the Iyengar tradition are held in the morning and evening on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in the morning on Saturdays at the Yoga Center of Lawrence, No. 4, 920 Mass. Call 830-YOGA for more information.

Table tennis
