Pigs run wild on I-70 after rig overturns

October 26, 2000

— A tractor-trailer hauling 980 pigs overturned Tuesday on Interstate 70 when it took a turn too fast, Kansas City Police said.

The pigs spilled over the viaduct where the accident occurred and others were released into the roadway, police said.

About 30 pigs died in the crash.

The driver was not hurt.

Traffic on the one-lane ramp from I-70 to Interstate 35, where the accident occurred about 2 p.m., had to be rerouted. The interstate was closed for more than four hours while authorities tried to right the overturned truck on the narrow roadway.

Officers, firefighters and other city workers rounded up the wayward pigs in makeshift pens until another truck was brought in to take them to a livestock auction.

Police spokesman Steve Young said the driver of the tractor-trailer was ticketed for careless driving.
