Services for Helen Carroll, 97, Lawrence, are pending and will be announced by Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
Mrs. Carroll died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
She was born Dec. 31, 1902, in Belle Plaine, the daughter of the Rev. Rufus L. and Effie May (McCluer) George. She attended Friends University, Wichita, and the University of Chattanooga in Tennessee before graduating from Southwestern College, Winfield, in 1925. She moved to Lawrence Presbyterian Manor in August from Andover Health Care Center.
Mrs. Carroll taught English, speedwriting and typing for a number of years at the Kansas School of Business, and was named National Speedwriting Teacher of the Year in 1955. She was a member of College Hill United Methodist Church, Wichita, and was director of the kindergarten Sunday school program there for more than 20 years. She also was a 70-year member of College Hill's Silver Link Class. She also was a member of American Association of University Women and First Tuesday Afternoon Book Club, where she was a charter and final member.
She married Harold E. Swanson in 1930. He died in 1963. She married John C. Carroll in 1964 in Wichita. He died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, John Swanson, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a daughter, Sandra Wiechert, Lawrence; a stepdaughter, Patricia C. Harms, Fort Collins, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
