DeSoto Free State's eighth-ranked boys soccer team defeated DeSoto, 3-0, on Monday.
Bryan Spangler, Paul Becker and Nick Ens scored for Free State.
The Firebirds led 1-0 at halftime then busted the game open the final half. Justin Howell recorded the shutout in goal. Defender Jesse Ens was cited for strong play.
"It was a big win for us because for the first time in school history we are ranked in the top 10 in the state. We are eighth now. Being ranked and able to get a win and live up to expectations with a team gunning for you is important for the program," coach Jason Pendleton said.
"We were able to get a lot of players in and get our playing time spread around," he added.
Now 8-3-1, Free State will meet SM North at 7 p.m. Thursday at YSI.
Lawrence High's varsity soccer team defeated Leavenworth, 4-2, on Monday at YSI.
Andrew Bailey, Zack Hemenway, Nathan Borland and Joey Kelly scored for the Lions.
Kelly and Roland deBoer picked up assists.
deBoer was cited for strong play at sweeper. Also defender Michael Bateman and midfielder Mike Powell were cited.
"It was a great victory," LHS coach Keith Nelson said. "We were down 2-1 at halftime. We came out the second half and dominated. We scored three goals and played one of the better halves of soccer we've played all year.
"We were fired up. We were winning all the 50-50 balls. The players decided in their hearts collectively they were not going to lose this game. We had more desire," Nelson added.
The Lions, 4-8, will travel to Olathe North today.
