Like Monday Night Football, without fireworks

October 7, 2000

— Topeka Gov. Bill Graves is ready for some football today and he has the helmets to prove it.

The governor brought a football atmosphere to his office during a news conference Friday. At the front of his desk were two football helmets one in Kansas University blue and the other bearing the design of the purple Kansas State University powercat.

"This is kind of like Monday Night Football without the pyrotechnics and helmets clashing together," Graves said.

Graves and his wife, Linda, will attend today's game as guests of KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway. After the game, Graves will be in the winning team's locker room to present the Governor's Cup.

Graves noted this would be his sixth year of presenting the cup and that during the five previous years it has gone to K-State.

"Coach (Terry) Allen assures me that he's going to get me into the KU locker room before I leave office," Graves said.

But don't ask Graves to pick a favorite.

"I always root for a good and competitive game, and it's one of those moments when I'm really glad I went to Kansas Wesleyan," he said.
