Jefferson and Douglas County voters selected conservative Republican Lee Tafanelli to replace retiring Rep. Joann Flower in the 47th District of the Kansas House of Representatives.

Tafanelli, 39, Ozawkie, a software development manager, defeated Democrat Lana Leach, 58, a real estate agent.

Lana Leach (D) 4,505 x Lee Tafanelli (R) 5,751

Tafanelli won 5,751 votes while 4,505 votes were cast for Leach, according to the Kansas Secretary of State's office.

"We're excited," Tafanelli said. "We're grateful to the people of the 47th District."

"It looks like he is going to be the winner," Leach said. "The district is more a Republican district. I knew it was going to be a tough battle."

Tafanelli said his victory in the Republican primary with more than 70 percent of the vote set the stage for his win Tuesday. Leach and her primary opponent found themselves in a virtual tie in August.

Tafanellli said his first priority in the upcoming legislative session would be to see the 47th District would receive its fair shar from a rework of the school finance formula.

Leach, the wife of former Rep. Robin Leach, D-Linwood, said she had hoped name recognition would give her candidacy a lift.
