In 1975 - Two large donations to the 1975 Lawrence United Fund boosted total contributions to more than $139,000 but drive officials noted that was a long way from the goal of $199,990. Nov. 12 was the deadline for the drive and chairman Ed Carter commented, "We're still in trouble and have to do a lot of 11th-hour hustling to make it." The two big contributions had come from Southwestern Bell ($32,415) and Hallmark ($19,656).

In 1900 - On Nov. 5, 1900, the Lawrence World had two different items concerning Kansas University. The first noted a football defeat and commented, "The football team is lacking in something this year and it seems to be in a coach. The present coach does not seem to enthuse the players." The second noted a more serious occurrence observing, "In attempting to paint the class letters on the water tower last night an engineering student fell seventy five feet receiving severe injuries."
