— The Portland Press Herald didn't report on George W. Bush's drunken-driving arrest even though one of its reporters was aware of the story more than three months ago.

Executive Editor Jeannine Guttman said the reporter came across the information in July while working on a story about the town of Kennebunkport preparing for the possibility of another Bush presidency.

The reporter's assignment editor decided the drunken-driving arrest 24 years ago happened too long ago to be relevant, Guttman said. The information was not passed up the chain of command, so Guttman and other top editors did not learn of the information until the story broke on the television news Thursday night, she said in a statement.
