November 5, 2000

The University Band concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Lied Center will feature Kansas University alumni compositions and conductors.

The program begins with Jeff Jordan's "Tharsos," dedicated to John Pozdro, a KU professor who taught for more than 40 years.

Jordan earned his master's degree in music composition from KU, where he studied with Poz. He now is working on a doctorate in conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Toshio Mashima's "Coral Blue A Symphonic Impression for Band" is directed by Naoya Takizawa, who conducted the University Band in the spring semesters of 1998 and 1999. Takizawa is pursuing a master's degree in conducting at KU.

The band will perform "Mt. Sakurajima," by Lawrence resident Stuart O'Neil, who teaches vocal and instrumental music for Oskaloosa public schools.

Tickets, which are $7 for general admission and $5 for students, are available at the Murphy Hall Box Office, 864-3982; Student Union Activities Box Office, 864-3477; and Lied Center Box Office, 864-ARTS.
