Kate Hansen focus of symposium

"Kate Hansen and American Missionary Women in East Asia," a free symposium, will be from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Kansas University Continuing Education, 1515 St. Andrews Drive.

The symposium offers a multidimensional perspective on the lives, work and legacy of Hansen and other American missionary women in East Asia.

The program will feature "Kate Hansen and Her Diaries, Letters and Publications," a presentation by Dane G. and Polly Bales and Grant Goodman; "American Missionary Women in East Asia and Their Legacy," a lecture by Daniel Bays; and "Kate Hansen and Japan," a panel discussion by Elaine Gerbert, Yoshie Murakami, Elizabeth Schultz and William Tsutsui.

LHS art teacher receives award

Angelia Perkins, art teacher at Lawrence High School, has been named Kansas Outstanding Secondary Art Educator by the Kansas Art Education Assn.

Perkins has taught in the Lawrence school district for the past five years. She teaches photography and digital imaging at LHS. She also has taught summer workshops for children for three years at Kansas University's Natural History Museum.
