Schwartz, Humbarger highlights on first day

The first day of the Class 6A state track and field meet was a day of seconds for Lawrence High and Free State. Both the Lions and Firebirds were paced by runner-up performances from junior Emily Schwartz and senior Alyssa Humbarger respectively Friday at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.

Phase I of Lawrence High’s state baseball master plan is complete. The No. 2 seed Lions ousted Wichita Heights, 5-2, on Friday at Kansas University’s muggy Hoglund Ballpark to reach today’s semifinals of the Class 6A state baseball tournament.

Court orders Koch to pay cleanup costs

A federal appeals court on Friday upheld a lower court’s decision ordering a Kansas oil refining company to pay 15 percent of the costs of cleaning up contamination at a Duncan, Okla., refinery it formerly owned.
