Lawrence High School graduate Chris Williams earned a $7,500 scholarship and placement in a national advertisement touting milk as good for the mind and bones.
Now, if he could just get a napkin.
Williams' photograph, his upper lip coated with milk, was featured in a USA Today newspaper ad sponsored the National Dairy Council. Others in the ad were Cal Ripken Jr., Pete Sampras, Mia Hamm and Jeff Gordon.
Williams was among 25 scholar-athletes chosen for the milk mustache of the year award. These college-bound students were honored for athletic excellence, academic performance, leadership skills and community service.
He was a three-time Kansas Class 6A boys cross country champion and two-time state track champion in the 3,200-meter run.
Williams plans to attend Duke University in Durham, N.C.
At LHS, Williams compiled a 4.0 grade-point average. He was a student council treasurer and volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, Sunflower State Games and Health Care Plus.
