If you go to watch whales off the Valdes Peninsula, here are some things to consider:

Admission: Some half-dozen tour boat operators provide whale-watching expeditions off the Valdes Peninsula during the season, which runs until mid-December. Tickets are about $25 for a one-hour expedition, or $35 with overland transfer from nearby Puerto Madryn. Children under 8 go half-price.

Who to call: The Moby Dick Catamaran and Sur Turismo (54 29654) 509-66; Hydrosport (54 29654) 950-65; Aquatours (54 965) 950-15.

Getting there: Puerto Madryn is about 40 miles north of the international airport in Trelew, a two-hour flight from Buenos Aires. A one-way ticket costs between $79 and $119. Contact: Aerolineas Argentinas at (54-11) 4340-7777.

Several bus companies service Trelew daily from Buenos Aires. The one-way, 640-mile (1,000-kilometer) trip costs about $50. Some options: La Puntual (54 29654) 711-25 or Andesmar (54 29654) 737-64.
