Michael Roberts sank an 18-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole Saturday to advance to the finals of the Kansas Golf Assn. Amateur Championships.
Roberts, a senior at Wichita State, drained the putt on the 23rd hole to defeat Chris Stuke of Topeka. Roberts faces Marty Sallaz of Leawood on Sunday at the Topeka Country Club. The two tee off at 7:30 a.m. for a 36-hole championship match.
Sallaz, the 1995 champion, defeated Lake Quivira's Casey Harbour in Saturday's other semifina,l 6 and 5.
The Roberts-Stuke match fell one hole short of the longest in tournament history. Both golfers missed opportunities to put the match away in regulation, only to see their opponent come roaring back.
Sallaz defeated Harbour, a member of the Kansas golf team, with relative ease. Leading by four at the turn, Sallaz won two more holes after Harbour bogeyed No. 11.
