Lawrence Phenix takes three wins

Clay Center The Lawrence Phenix has won three games in the ASA state Class B 10-under softball tournament.

The Phenix defeated the Wichita Vipers, 9-1, and the Topeka Pride, 9-2, on Saturday. Lawrence downed the Manhattan Optimist Reds, 4-1, on Friday night.

Against the Vipers, Lawrence's Callie Craig pitched a two-hitter, and LaDonna Weien and Julianne George both had two hits.

Against Topeka, George and Dequesne Sprow combined to allow just three hits. Sprow had two doubles, Craig was 3-for-3 with a double and triple, and Weien was 3-for-3 with a triple.

On Friday against Manhattan, George tossed a no-hitter and struck out eight. Weien also had two hits.

Mavericks end season at zone


Cody Cowser had three hits and Chris Barr had two hits for the Mavs, who finished third at zone and a 23-19 overall record.

Earlier on Saturday, Lawrence beat the Blue Valley Tigers, 8-7. Devon Myers went 2-for-4 with a home run and double. Kyle Unruh had two hits and two RBIs.
