Valuation estimate changes levy
A change in the estimated citywide assessed valuation will make a $3.83 difference in city property taxes this December for the owner of a home valued at $100,000.
The city had been working on an estimated total valuation of $547 million. The new numbers are about $545.9 million.
To compensate and keep the same budget numbers, the city is adjusting its property tax levy from 23.436 mills originally estimated to 23.769 mills. The 1999 levy was 24.512 mills. A mill is a tax of $1 per $1,000 assessed valuation.
At Tuesday's Lawrence City Commission meeting commissioners are expected to set Aug. 8 as the public hearing date for the proposed budget.
City Manager Mike Wildgen has made other changes since his initial proposal of a $95.2 million total budget.
He added $350,000 in sidewalks and medians for Louisiana Street.
The commission meets at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at city hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.
