Faces and places

Deanna Lieber has joined the Lawrence law firm of Stevens & Brand as an associate attorney. She will concentrate on family law and appellate court practice.

Lieber is a 1998 graduate of Kansas University's School of Law, where she received the Walter Hiersteiner Outstanding Service Award and the Payne & Jones Appellate Advocacy Award.

Lieber has served as law clerk for the Judge Robert Gernon of the Kansas Court of Appeals.

The firm also recently hired Taunya Cole as business manager and Laura Cossey as a legal assistant.

  • Mary Ann Bastemeyer, a lifelong Lawrence resident, has joined Conner & Associates, 3320 Clinton Parkway Court, as a sales associate for Farmers Insurance Group. She is licensed to handle personal and commercial insurance.

  • Lawrence-based LaGarde, a provider of e-commerce software for Microsoft FrontPage merchant developers, recently exhibited its StoreFront e-commerce software at PC Expo in New York. More than 70,000 people participated in the event, including more than 600 exhibiting industry leaders.

In addition to exhibiting, LaGarde also introduced StoreFront Now, a new e-commerce service. Built on the StoreFront e-commerce platform, StoreFront Now is designed to provide merchants with an easy-to-use, managed e-commerce service delivered in connection with FrontPage Web host service providers.

StoreFront Now will be offered directly from LaGarde and as a shared revenue service with certified StoreFront Web host partners. The package will carry a setup price of less than $200 and monthly service costs below $100.

Applications for beta testers are being accepted from the StoreFront Web site at StoreFront Now will be released in the third quarter 2000.

LaGarde recently announced that it has partnered with CyberCash Inc., the world's leading provider of electronic payment technologies and services, to provide transaction processing and merchant account services for StoreFront Now.

  • Eric Scott has joined First State Bank and Trust as bank manager at 609 Vt. Scott, a graduate of Lawrence High School, is responsible for retail operations at the branch office and a planned office at Sixth Street and Monterey Way. He has 18 years of banking experience.

  • The International Association of Business Communicators is accepting entries from communication professionals for its annual Bronze Quill award competition. The deadline is Aug. 8.

Competition categories include communication management, publications, writing, design and photography, video, audio, Internet/Intranet and wild card miscellaneous entries.

Entries must be for work completed between Jan. 1, 1999, and June 30, 2000. Works traditionally are representative of persons employed in public relations and communications fields at corporations, non-profit organizations, advertising agencies and universities.

Entries will be judged by professional communicators in IABC chapters. The Topeka chapter sponsors the Bronze Quill award.

Fees for IABC members are $25 per entry or $40 for two entries; non-member costs are $45 per entry or $75 for two.

  • Katherin Steinbacher, an associate with Evans-Bierly-Hutchison & Associates in Lawrence, has passed the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions' professional engineering examination, making her a licensed professional engineer in Kansas. Steinbacher has worked at the firm for five years. She is a member of the Kansas University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Board, and is a former member of the city's Traffic Safety Commission.

  • Lawrence-based Glenn Livingood Penzler Architects has changed its name to GLPM Architects Inc.

The name change recognizes contributions to the firm by Jonathan Miller, a stockholder since 1995. Miller is responsible for day-to-day operations of the firm's Kansas City, Mo., office, which recently moved at 800 W. 47th St., Suite 230, at the Country Club Plaza.

All four of GLPM Architects' principals -- Dale Glenn, David Livingood, Craig Penzler and Jonathan Miller -- are involved with the management of both the Lawrence and Kansas City, Mo., offices. The Lawrence office is located at 1001 N.H.

Dorian White has been promoted to assistant store manager at Dillons, 1015 W. 23rd. She previously was manager trainee at the store. White joined the company in 1982 as a courtesy clerk in Great Bend.

Honors and awards

Criticare Home Health Services Inc. 1006 W. Sixth, received the Conrad Jobst Precision award from Beiersdorf-Jobst Inc. The award is given for outstanding accuracy in measurement and style selection of Jobst-Custom Vascular Support products.

Laura LaFrenz is Criticare's qualified fitter for Jobst-Custom Supports and other Jobst products. LaFrenz also recently completed training required for becoming a certified fitter for Elvarex Lymphedema Garments, a subsidiary of Jobst.

Criticare Home Health Services is locally owned and has served the Lawrence area for more than 15 years. The company carries a full line of compression and support garments, hosiery and socks.

Central National Bank, of Junction City, has been awarded an Exceptional Performance Award for earning a 5-star superior rating from Bauerfinancial Reports Inc., the nation's leading bank research firm.

The award is based on an analysis of current financial data as filed by Central National Bank with federal regulators, supplemented by historical data.

Central National Bank has a branch in Lawrence.

Ron King, an American Family Insurance agent in Lawrence, was the company's district agent of the month for June. King also qualified in the "President's Top 100," American Family's Bahamas All-American campaign.

Coming events

The monthly meeting of the Twilight Chapter of the American Business Women's Assn. will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the American Legion, 3408 W. Sixth. Networking activity will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cost of dinner is $9.

Officers for 2000-2001 will be installed. They are Valerie Kampfer, president; Susan Bartlett, vice president; Janice Stewart and Paula Commons, co-secretaries; and Jeanie Wulfkuhle, treasurer.

There will be a committee break-out session for planning events for the upcoming year.
