Franchitti wins provisional pole

Toronto Dario Franchitti and Juan Montoya like things close.

Last season, the two CART FedEx Series drivers tied at the top of the season point standings, with rookie Montoya winning the title on a tiebreaker seven wins to two.

So far this year, both have been hampered by a variety of mechanical problems and unlucky breaks that have left Montoya seventh in the points and Franchitti 13th heading into Sunday's Toronto Molson Indy, the 10th of 20 races this season.

"It's not too late for us," Franchitti said Friday after nipping Montoya for the provisional pole on the drying 1.755-mile temporary street circuit.

Coulthard fastest in Austrian practice

Spielberg, Austria David Coulthard kept up the pressure on Michael Schumacher by dominating Friday's practice for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Coulthard, who trails Schumacher by 12 points in the drivers' standings with eight Grands Prix left in the 17-race season, is coming off a victory at the French GP two weeks ago.

Sunday's race in Austria will be his 100th Formula One race and Coulthard could reduce Schumacher's lead by as many as 10 points with another victory.

The Scottish driver clocked the fastest lap on the 2.688-mile A1-Ring with a time of one minute, 12.464 seconds in his McLaren-Mercedes.
