Helen Benefiel, a five-year employee in the bakery department at the Dillons at 3000 W. Sixth, Lawrence, won first place in the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Assn.'s Fifth Annual Cake Decorating Challenge in June at Anaheim, Calif.
Benefiel's portfolio of cake decorating designs was selected from more than 60 entries nationwide. During the three-day competition, she and two other national finalists created dazzling displays, with each contestant decorating enough cakes to fill an 8-foot display case. Additionally, contestants were required to create a wedding cake and three complete special event cakes.
Each contestant was judged on artistic and technical quality, color, lettering/art/design, overall creativity and appearance.
