A little wisdom

Looking for a cookbook that makes a neat stocking stuffer? The miniature version of "Joy of Cooking" is now available. It's small, just 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches, yet filled with cooking tips and a few recipes. This handy guide has general information on some cooking techniques. Its condensed format is perfect for cooks who don't want to grab a full-blown cookbook when they want to know how to roll out pastry dough. The miniature version is about $4.95 at most bookstores.

Escape claws

Good news, seafood lovers. The lobster population is thriving along the ocean floor off New England, baffling scientists who point to how much lobstermen are catching. According to the National Marine Fisheries Service, the lobster catch increased to 78.4 million pounds in 1999, from 48.5 million pounds in 1995. Yet the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission says the lobster population tripled between 1982 and 1997.

Foods for the wise

There are few foods in the world that are rich in vitamins and minerals, and salmon swims to the top of the list. This week "Guided By Flavor" host Tony Nave prepares a number of salmon dishes. A new show airs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday each week on Sunflower Cablevision Channel 6 and repeats at 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The show also airs at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. Sunday and 8:30 p.m. Monday.
