NBC to mike referees

New York NBC is counting on referees to bring TV audiences closer to NBA action. After last season's failed efforts to force coaches to wear microphones, the network will wire refs for sound on all of its broadcasts this season. NBC miked referees only on games of the week last season. Coaches will have the option of wearing a mike, and NBC will use boom mikes near benches to pick up sound during timeouts. NBC's season coverage opens Dec. 25. Ratings dropped 21 percent last season.




Kemp misses practice

Portland, Ore. Portland Trail Blazers reserve forward Shawn Kemp missed practice Tuesday, but made the team flight to Dallas for tonight's game against the Mavericks. Coach Mike Dunleavy, who stayed behind to watch his son Mike Jr. play for Duke against the University of Portland on Tuesday night, said he would meet with Kemp after this morning's shootaround and decide then whether the player would be punished.




Atlanta Hawks place Henderson on injured list

Atlanta Atlanta placed starting forward Alan Henderson on the injured list with a sprained left shoulder prior to Tuesday night's game against the Knicks. Henderson, the Hawks' second-leading scorer (15.3), had his streak of 105 consecutive starts end when he missed Atlanta's last game on Saturday against New Jersey.

Henderson joins Jim Jackson, the team's leading scorer (16.1) on the injured list. Jackson has a sprained right knee. The Hawks did not immediately replace Henderson on the roster.




Suns activate Garces, place Elie on injured list

Phoenix Phoenix placed guard Mario Elie on the injured list Tuesday and activated forward Ruben Garces. Elie, who had been starting while Penny Hardaway recovers from knee surgery, broke his left hand Dec. 13 and is expected to be sidelined 3-to-4 weeks.

Garces was placed on the injured list Dec. 7 with a bulging disc and a sprained lower back. He has played in eight games, averaging 1.4 points and 1.1 rebounds.




Bulls activate Miller

Chicago Chicago activated center Brad Miller from the injured list Tuesday and placed rookie center Dalibor Bagaric on the injured list. Miller missed the last 20 games because of a broken bone in his right hand. Bagaric has tendinitis in his right knee. Miller broke a bone at the base of his hand in a Nov. 7 game against Washington. He was averaging 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds.




76ers waive Okulaja

Philadelphia Forward Ademola Okulaja was waived Tuesday by Philadelphia, allowing him to play for a European team. Okulaja will play for the Spanish club B.C. Girona. Okulaja was placed on the injured list with a back strain Oct. 30. The former North Carolina-Chapel Hill player was never activated by the 76ers.




Hornets waive Roberson

Charlotte, N.C. Charlotte on Tuesday waived forward Terrance Roberson, who played in only three games this season. Roberson, an undrafted rookie from Fresno State spent 13 games on the injured list with right knee tendinitis.
