To the editor:
The Christmas concert by the Lawrence City Band was quite a gift. The audience was treated to an energetic assortment of holiday tunes, including arrangements by city band director Robert Foster. The pieces were cheerfully introduced by emcee Bob Newton and quite professionally performed by the band.
I knew it would be a good time, but I was not prepared for it to be one of the real high points of the holiday. The hall was full of wiggly, energetic kids whose focus seemed to sharpen when Santa came out to lead the crowd in a Christmas sing-a-long. Like the summer band concerts in South Park, this event was a good time for all ages and a chance to take a step away from the hectic pace of the holiday.
It was a reminder of what a great pool of talent we have in our City Band. Musicians' time is in demand during the holidays and we should thank the members of the band, Dr. Foster, Mrs. Kelly and the concert's sponsors The Lawrence Journal-World, the City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and the Rice Foundation - for their time and commitment in preparing this gift to the community.
