Terry McIntyre told a friend he robbed a Lawrence shoe store and raped a clerk there, according to testimony at his trial Tuesday morning.
McIntyre, 40, Kansas City, Kan., is charged in Douglas County District Court with rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and kidnapping in a July 1999 incident at Payless ShoeSource, 3231 Iowa.
Cyrus Carter, a Kansas City friend of McIntyre's, said McIntyre came to his home the night of the crime.
"He told me he robbed the Payless Shoe Store and raped a girl at 32nd and Iowa," Carter said. "It was mind-boggling the way it went down."
Defense attorney James Rumsey said Carter had retracted his story to a private detective, but Carter denied that.
Rumsey also noted that Carter who had keys to a car he shared with McIntyre, found outside the store is closer in size and weight to initial descriptions of the robber than is McIntyre. But Carter said he has never been to the shoe store.
Scientific testimony began late in the morning and was expected to continue through the afternoon.
