— Lawrence High opened its girls basketball season with a thrilling 57-51 overtime victory over Kansas City Washington on Monday.

The Lions (1-0) outscored the Wildcats (0-2) 19-14 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. In the extra period, LHS dominated, outscoring Washington, 8-2.

"We were playing behind really the whole game," LHS coach David Platt said. "Our girls didn't give up. They kept fighting."

LHS junior forward Mandy Amyx scored a team-high 18 points and LHS senior forward Emily Schwartz added 12 points.

"Emily Schwartz also did a great job defensively on their best player (Randi Johnson)," Platt said. "Once Johnson fouled out (late in the fourth quarter), we pretty much had our way in the paint."

LHS senior guard Tayler Guntert added 11 points, including a three-pointer.

Washington opened its season last week with a loss to Olathe South.

"We did some nice things with our full-court pressure and that confused them," Platt said. "They played a game and we hadn't, so we were fairly rusty."

In the junior varsity game, Lawrence rolled to a 41-18 victory. Jenna Wilcox scored 10 points to lead the Lions. Shari Lassiter and Audrey Pope were cited for their defense.

The Lions will play tonight at Kansas City Harmon before meeting Shawnee Heights on Thursday at LHS.
