In 1975

Baker University president Jerald Walker said he anticipated an 800-plus enrollment figure at Baker for the coming fall semester.

Many local businesses were closed for the warm Labor Day weekend and crowds at area lakes and reservoirs were huge.

A liquor store clerk who refused to take an armed robber seriously frustrated the would-be thief and chased him away after refusing to relinquish any money or valuables. Police reminded that such action against armed people was not advisable but lauded the man's courage.

The housing situations at both Kansas University and Haskell Indian Junior College were both considered critical due to enrollment rises.

In 1960

A $50,000 planning item for Lawrence local flood protection was deleted by a U.S. Senate-House conference committee on public works. But local flood control leader Emil Heck expressed optimism that the item would be restored at a later date.

Eudora High School had an enrollment of 160 for the fall semester of 1960, according to principal D.E. Kerr.

E.R. Zook, secretary-manager of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, left for Washington to visit Senate and House officials about the current building program at Haskell Institute and how to get more funds, badly needed for additions and renovation on the local campus.

In 1900

On Aug. 31, 1900, the Lawrence Journal told of the arrival of the Kansas University football coach, Lawrence W. Boynton from his home at Binghamton, N.Y. The Journal noted, "Mr. Boynton is a young looking man, and looks more like a college man than any recent coach that has been employed at Kansas University. He does not look much of an athlete, but his record in all around athletics is very good, and his football work in the past has been of high grade."
