Tanner steps down

for planning post

Ralph Tanner resigned his post as chairman of the Baldwin Planning Commission Tuesday to protest a vote in favor of allowing liquor by the drink in downtown Baldwin.

Tanner, who said he had served as chairman for about a decade, said allowing liquor would violate the spirit with which Baldwin was founded and would hurt the town environment.

Baldwin was founded in conjunction with the formation of Baker University in the 1850s. Lots from 640 acres of land were sold off to pay to build the university with the restriction that the properties not be used to make or sell liquor.

The city planning commission voted 4-1 in favor of recommending that special use permits be established that would allow alcohol sales in downtown Baldwin.

The issue will now go before the Baldwin City Council.
