Robinson on Move: Lawrence native Shane Robinson has been named junior varsity basketball coach at Benedictine University in Atchison. Robinson, a former Lawrence High football player, was sophomore basketball coach at Fayetteville (Ark.) High last year.

Spray Fat Tire Titlist: Larry Spray of Lawrence won the Masters Men title in the Missouri Fat Tire bicycle series last weekend at Smithville Lake. Second places were earned by Lawrence riders Jed Schneider (Expert Men), Hiram Salvini (Expert Veteran) and Troy Smith (Sport Men, ages 25-34). Other Lawrence entrants were Bryce Lawrence, Andy McSorley and Doug Plummer.

  • Two Share JGC Low: Roger Geminhardt and John Shafer each fired a 77 for low gross score in last Sunday's Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Ben Overman and Ron Huckfeldt were runners-up with 79s. In net, Ted Johnson was low with a 66, followed by Bob Clark at 68 and Dean Hilker at 72.

  • Dragsters to Appear: Several drag racers who will compete in this weekend's NHRA event in Topeka will be at Crown Chevrolet, 3400 Iowa, from 5-8 p.m. today. Scheduled to appear are Cory McClenathan, Tommy Johnson, Kurt Johnson and Dave Creasy.

  • Boeck, Heitzman Win: Dee Boeck of Lawrence and Paul Heitzman of Eudora won age-group titles at the Cliffhanger 8K run last Sunday in Kansas City, Mo. Boeck won the women's 50-54 category in 35:35; Heitzman the 65-69 men's division in 32:17. Other Lawrence placers were Gina Inzerillo, second in women's 20-24 at 1:15:00; and Carol McFall, second in women's 35-39 in 31:15. On Friday and Saturday, Heitzman ran in a pair of 5K races in Tulsa, Okla., and won them in times of 19:42 and 19:55.

  • Force U-16 Girls Win: Kaw Valley Force U-16 girls soccer edged the Royal Cheetahs, 1-0, last weekend. Wallis Romzek scored the goal off an assist from Shelly Valverde. Goalkeepers were Celese Seibert and Jennifer Nickell.

  • LCC Aide at Ryder Cup: Lawrence Country Club assistant golf pro Wes Lynch and former LCC aide John Douglas worked behind the scenes at the Ryder Cup matches last week in Brookline, Mass. They were enlisted by Jon Drago, yet another former LCC aide who is now affiliated with the PGA of America.

  • LABA Fall Tryouts: Fall tryouts for Lawrence Amateur Baseball Association teams are at noon on Oct. 9 and at 3 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Ice Field. LABA is for youths ages 15-18. LABA is also taking applications for coaching posts. For information, call Lee Ice at 843-0467.

  • Former Firebirds at JCCC: Free State High grads Jorde Matthews and Brett Larson played on the Johnson County CC soccer team that won three games in St. Louis over the weekend. JCCC has a 9-2 record.

  • Hoopster Leagues Forming: Registration deadline is Oct. 12 for Lawrence Hoopster AAU basketball leagues for third through fifth grade boys and sixth and seventh grade boys. Tryouts are scheduled on Oct. 16-17. Scholarships are available through the Extra Mile Foundation. For information, call Rick McNabb at 749-4664.

  • Orchards ace: Mike Newman of Lawrence had a hole-in-one Wednesday on the par 3, 130-yard, No. 9 hole at Orchards. Witnesses: Chuck Nead and Larry Fitzgerald. He used a seven iron.
