The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library Book Sale, which starts today, is no ordinary book sale.
"Legendary," Bruce Flanders, library director, termed it. "It draws in people from not only Lawrence but throughout the entire area."
The reason is Kansas University and the steady supply it provides of unusual texts of all kinds, he said.
"It's not just cast off materials from the library's collection," Flanders said. "There are an awful lot of scholarly or academic titles you don't see in a typical library book sale."
About 100,000 books have been divided into 100 different categories from children's books to political science texts, said Norman Saul, president of the Friends organization.
Last year the sale generated about $50,000 that the nonprofit organization has used to supplement the library budget and purchase books as well as special items like computers and a new collection of DVD movies.
A special members-only sale and private auction will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today in a tent outside the library at 707 Vt. Memberships to Friends of the Lawrence Public Library can be purchased for $10 at the entrance.
The private auction will include sets of books, signed copies and early editions.
The sale will be open to the general public 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday; noon to 9 p.m. Monday; and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Monday will be half-price day. On Tuesday bags of books can be purchased for $5.
