On Sept. 29, 1899, the Lawrence World stated: "The days of the city marshal are full of troubles. It is generally known that he is besieged by neighbors who quarrel over their dogs, chickens and children, that he is daily found fault with by everybody for the things that he don't do, but he has troubles that the public do not know of...The city marshal is frequently called upon to drop in and help some husband and wife who have quarreled to come to a peaceable settlement. Some people seem to think that anything on earth comes directly under the duties of a city marshal."
