Atchison -- The Atchison/St. Joe Division of Atchison Casting Corp. has a contract to build $4.1 million worth of ballistic armor for use in the Abrams M1A1 battle tank.

The company said Tuesday it was awarded the contract by General Dynamics Land Systems. Delivery is scheduled for the remainder of fiscal 2000.

The tanks will be sold to Egypt.

"This is good news for the U.S. military supply chain, which includes Atchison Casting Corp., especially if it leads to additional foreign military sales opportunities over the next few years," said John R. Kujawa, group vice president.

The company's Atchison/St. Joe division employs about 800 people.

Atchison Casting produces iron, steel and nonferrous castings and forgings for a wide variety of equipment, capital goods and consumer markets. It has locations across the nation, in Canada and the United Kingdom.

It had fiscal 1999 sales of $475.6 million. The company's stock rose 1/8 to 9 1/4 Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
