Bus-riding privileges have been suspended for an undisclosed number of students in response to a melee last week that left two students in police custody.
Tom Bracciano, safety and transportation supervisor for the Lawrence school district, said Monday that bus-riding privileges for some students on the route had been suspended. He declined to elaborate.
"We have taken some action against some of the students on the bus," he said. "We're working with the schools on disciplinary actions."
Last Tuesday, several Lawrence police officers responded to an altercation in the 2300 block of Princeton Place, where a fight was reported on a school bus.
Police detained a 16-year-old after he admitted to slapping another youth on the head while on the bus.
Police then tackled, pepper-sprayed and handcuffed a 15-year-old youth after he allegedly pushed an officer into a mailbox, police said.
In response to the incident, a monitor was placed on the bus, which carries students from West Junior High and Free State High School.
"We've had no additional problems on that bus," Bracciano said Monday.
He said the district usually puts an additional person on buses when situations such as Tuesday's incident occur.
"We had some issues on (that) bus of kids getting rowdy. We weren't aware of any intimidation problems. The situation the other day just got out of hand."
